OpenAI has significantly enhanced ChatGPT's voice mode, seamlessly integrating it directly into the main chat interface. This update allows users to engage in more natural, real-time conversations, viewing text responses and visuals like images or maps as they speak, eliminating the need for a separate screen.
The company announced on Tuesday that this user interface update for its popular AI chatbot means users can now access ChatGPT Voice right inside their existing chats, rather than having to switch to a dedicated mode.
Previously, interacting with ChatGPT's voice feature meant switching to a distinct screen, characterized by an animated blue circle. This isolated mode only offered audio responses, forcing users to exit it to review text or visual content. The new integration revolutionizes this experience, enabling a fluid back-and-forth between spoken commands and visual feedback within a single view.
You can now use ChatGPT Voice right inside chat—no separate mode needed.
You can talk, watch answers appear, review earlier messages, and see visuals like images or maps in real time.
Rolling out to all users on mobile and web. Just update your app.— OpenAI (@OpenAI) November 25, 2025
The updated user interface means that as you converse with the AI chatbot, you can simultaneously watch its answers appear in text, review earlier messages, and see any shared visuals during your conversations, such as images or maps, all in real time.
This change is designed to make interactions with the AI chatbot feel more natural, as users can more easily move between speech and text within the same conversation. However, it's worth noting that you'll still need to tap an "end" button to conclude a voice conversation when you're ready to switch back to text-only mode.
This revamped voice mode is now the default experience and is currently rolling out to all ChatGPT users across both web and mobile apps.
For those who might prefer the original, separate voice mode, OpenAI has provided an option to revert. Users can find a new "Separate mode" toggle under "Voice Mode" within the "Settings" menu, allowing them to switch back to the prior interface if desired.
