Fal, an artificial intelligence startup specializing in hosting image, video, and audio AI models for developers, has announced a substantial $140 million Series D funding round. Led by venture capital firm Sequoia, this latest investment propels Fal's valuation to an impressive $4.5 billion, tripling its worth since July.

The Series D round saw participation from prominent investors including Kleiner Perkins and Andreessen Horowitz. This marks Fal's third fundraise this year, and notably included a secondary sale for early investors, according to sources familiar with the deal. Bloomberg previously reported that the company's valuation of $4.5 billion is approximately three times its worth when it secured a $125 million Series C round in July.

TechCrunch had reported in October that Fal was raising a new round from investors like Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins, valuing the company at over $4 billion. At the time, sources indicated the total raise was around $250 million. This higher figure accounts for both the $140 million capital raised directly by the company and the secondary sale where existing investors offloaded shares.

Fal provides the critical infrastructure layer for multimodal AI, serving a diverse client base that includes industry leaders such as Adobe, Shopify, Canva, and Quora. Founded in 2021 by Burkay Gur, a former machine learning leader at Coinbase, and Gorkem Yurtseven, an ex-Amazon developer, the company has quickly achieved significant financial milestones. Bloomberg also reported that Fal surpassed $200 million in revenue as of October.
