First Voyage, a startup dedicated to helping individuals cultivate positive habits, has successfully secured $2.5 million in a seed funding round. The investment, led by a16z speedrun, SignalFire, True Global, and other investors, will accelerate the development and expansion of its innovative AI companion app, Momo Self Care.

In a digital landscape increasingly saturated with AI-generated content, First Voyage aims to provide a meaningful AI experience. Its app, Momo Self Care, features an adorable digital pet named Momo. Users care for Momo, and in return, the AI companion reminds them to complete personalized habit-building tasks.

Users can easily set up reminders for desired tasks, and Momo then prompts them to stay on track. Similar to the popular productivity app Focus Friend, Momo incorporates gamification by rewarding users with in-app coins for task completion. These coins can be used to purchase items and customize their digital pet, enhancing engagement.

Beyond reminders, Momo also serves as an interactive self-care companion. Users can converse with Momo about their well-being, and the AI will offer tailored habit and task recommendations based on their personal goals.

"Momo helps users become the best versions of themselves, and users reward Momo with care, affection, and cute accessories," co-founder and CEO Besart Opa told TechCrunch.

Opa revealed that Momo users have already created over 2 million tasks on the platform, with productivity, spirituality, and mindfulness emerging as the most popular habit categories.

The rise of AI apps and toys, alongside powerful chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, has sparked discussions about the potential for AI companions to cause more harm than good. However, Opa believes that relationships between AI characters and humans are set to grow significantly in the coming years.

He emphasized the positive impact of AI apps focused on wellness and self-care compared to those targeting "base urges."

"We are happy so many founders [and] startups are working in the AI self-care wellness space instead of building waifus," he stated, adding that "the personalization capability of AI will take the impact of these relationships to another level."

First Voyage has implemented robust safety guardrails within Momo, including prompt filters, to ensure conversations remain within appropriate boundaries.

The newly acquired capital will be instrumental in launching Momo on the Android app store, complementing its existing availability on iOS. The First Voyage team also plans to enhance Momo's intelligence, allowing for more sophisticated and intuitive interactions with users.

"We hope Momo and the community around it become a defining consumer brand that uses the best of AI, animation, and gamification to improve as many lives as possible," Opa concluded.
