Three former Google employees are revolutionizing children's education with Sparkli, an interactive AI-powered learning app designed to captivate young minds. Moving beyond the limitations of text and voice-only generative AI experiences, Sparkli aims to provide an immersive and engaging platform for kids aged 5-12, making complex topics accessible and fun.
The Genesis of Sparkli: A Parent's Vision
Founded last year by Lax Poojary, Lucie Marchand, and Myn Kang, Sparkli emerged from a common parental frustration. Poojary and Kang, both parents themselves, found existing AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini insufficient for satisfying their children's boundless curiosity with truly engaging answers.
"Kids, by definition, are very curious, and my son would ask me questions about how cars work or how it rains. My approach was to use ChatGPT or Gemini to explain these concepts to a six-year-old, but that is still a wall of text. What kids want is an interactive experience. This was our core process behind founding Sparkli," Poojary told TechCrunch.
The co-founders bring a wealth of experience from Google's internal startup incubator, Area 120. Poojary and Kang previously co-founded Touring Bird, a travel aggregator, and Shoploop, a video-focused social commerce app. Marchand, Sparkli's CTO, was also a co-founder of Shoploop, further solidifying the team's background in innovative product development.
Beyond Text: An Interactive Learning Experience
Sparkli envisions a future where children don't just consume information but actively interact with it. Poojary illustrates this shift:
"When a kid asked what Mars looks like fifty years ago, we might have shown them a picture. Ten years ago, we might have shown them a video. With Sparkli, we want kids to interact and experience what Mars is like."
The app offers AI-powered learning "expeditions" that delve into predefined topics across various categories, or allow children to pose their own questions to create personalized learning paths. Sparkli also highlights a new topic daily to encourage continuous discovery. Each chapter within a topic integrates a rich mix of audio, video, images, quizzes, and games. A unique "choose-as-you-go" adventure format removes the pressure of right or wrong answers, fostering a stress-free learning environment.
Notably, Sparkli aims to bridge gaps in traditional education by teaching modern concepts such as skills design, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship.
AI-Powered Content Creation and Pedagogical Focus
A core strength of Sparkli lies in its generative AI, which creates all media assets on the fly. This allows the company to generate a complete learning experience within two minutes of a user asking a question, with ongoing efforts to reduce this time even further.
Recognizing the distinct needs of educational content, Sparkli prioritizes pedagogical soundness. While many AI assistants exist, their primary focus isn't education. To ensure its product effectively serves children, Sparkli's first two hires were a PhD holder in educational science and AI, and an experienced teacher. This deliberate choice underscores their commitment to designing content with sound educational principles.
Child safety is paramount in the realm of AI. Sparkli addresses these concerns by strictly banning topics like sexual content. For sensitive subjects such as self-harm, the app guides children towards emotional intelligence and encourages open communication with their parents.
School Pilots and Future Plans
Sparkli is currently piloting its app with an institute that boasts a network of over 100,000 students across numerous schools. Last year, the product was tested in more than 20 schools, targeting children aged 5-12.
The platform also features a dedicated teacher module, enabling educators to track student progress and assign homework. Inspired by the engaging mechanics of Duolingo, Sparkli incorporates streaks, rewards, and personalized quest cards (based on initial avatar setup) to motivate children and encourage frequent app usage.
"We have seen a very positive response from our school pilots. Teachers often use Sparkli to create expeditions that kids can explore at the start of the class and lead them into a more discussion-based format. Some teachers also used it to create [homework] after they explain a topic to let kids explore further and get a measure of their understanding," Poojary explained.
While the immediate focus is on global school partnerships, Sparkli plans to open consumer access, allowing parents to download the app by mid-2026.
Securing Seed Funding
Sparkli recently secured $5 million in pre-seed funding, led by Swiss venture firm Founderful. This investment marks Founderful's first pure-play edtech venture, signaling strong confidence in Sparkli's potential. Lukas Wender, Founderful's founding partner, cited the team's technical prowess and the significant market opportunity as key drivers for their investment.
"As a father of two kids who are in school now, I see them learning interesting stuff, but they don't learn topics like financial literacy or innovation in technology. I thought from a product point of view, Sparkli gets them away from video games and lets them learn stuff in an immersive way," Wender commented.
With this funding, Sparkli is poised to expand its reach and further develop its innovative platform, promising a new era of interactive, AI-driven learning for children worldwide.
