Google's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Gemini, has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 750 million monthly active users (MAUs). This rapid adoption, detailed in the company's fourth-quarter 2025 earnings report, positions Gemini as a formidable competitor in the burgeoning AI landscape, closing the gap with rivals like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Meta AI.
The latest figures represent substantial growth for the Gemini app, which reported 650 million MAUs just last quarter. In comparison, Meta AI reported nearly 500 million monthly users. While Gemini's ascent is impressive, it still trails its primary competitor, ChatGPT, which was estimated to have around 810 million MAUs by late 2025.
Driving Factors Behind Gemini's Growth
The surge in Gemini's user base follows the recent introduction of Gemini 3, Google's most advanced AI model to date. The company touts Gemini 3 for its unprecedented depth and nuanced responses.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Gemini 3's launch in AI mode as a "positive driver" for the company's growth, emphasizing that ongoing investment and iterative development are key to sustaining this momentum.
Further fueling future expansion, Google recently rolled out the Google AI Plus plan, a more affordable subscription priced at $7.99 per month. While too new to impact the latest quarterly figures, this plan is expected to attract budget-conscious consumers and drive continued user acquisition.
Philipp Schindler, Google's chief business officer, affirmed the company's dual strategy during an investor call, stating, "We are focused on a free tier and subscriptions and seeing great growth."
Broader Impact on Alphabet's Performance
Gemini's robust growth coincides with a strong financial performance for its parent company, Alphabet. For the first time, Alphabet surpassed $400 billion in annual revenue this quarter, an achievement largely attributed to the expansion and increased demand within its AI division. In a move to bolster its competitive edge against Nvidia, Google also recently unveiled Ironwood, the latest generation of its custom TPU AI accelerator chip.
Pichai reiterated the significance of these advancements in today's earnings release:
"The launch of Gemini 3 was a major milestone, and we have great momentum. Our first party models, like Gemini, now process over 10 billion tokens per minute via direct API use by our customers, and the Gemini App has grown to over 750 million monthly active users. Search saw more usage than ever before, with AI continuing to drive an expansionary moment."
