Google has officially launched its more affordable AI Plus subscription plan in India, a strategic move aimed at intensifying competition with rival low-cost AI offerings, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT Go. This initiative targets India's massive user base with a compelling price point.

For new users in India, the Google AI Plus plan is available at an introductory price of ₹199 (approximately $2.21) per month for the first six months. Following this initial period, the subscription will revert to its standard monthly rate of ₹399 (approximately $4.44).

The AI Plus subscription significantly enhances user capabilities across Google's AI ecosystem. Subscribers gain access to higher usage limits for Gemini 3 Pro and the Nano Banana Pro image editing model. The plan also includes video generation features within the Gemini and Flow applications, expanded access to deep research tools in NotebookLM, and a generous 200GB of storage across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. Additionally, subscribers can extend access to up to five family members.

Prior to this launch, Google's most economical AI subscription available in India was the AI Pro plan, which was priced considerably higher at ₹1,950 (approximately $21.69) per month.

Google's introduction of customized pricing for India comes after similar rollouts in other markets. The AI Plus plan first debuted in Indonesia last September and became available in over 40 other countries that same month. In contrast, OpenAI launched its sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan in India earlier, in August, before expanding it to other regions in subsequent months. OpenAI's Go plan offers users ten times higher limits for messages, image generation, and file uploads compared to its free tier.

The Indian market has become a key battleground for AI companies, which are actively offering various incentives to attract its vast population of potential users. For instance, Perplexity partnered with telecom giant Airtel to provide its Pro plan free for a year to all Airtel customers. Similarly, OpenAI offered ChatGPT Go free for a year to both existing Go subscribers and new users in India. Google itself has collaborated with telecom provider Reliance Jio to offer its AI Pro plan for 18 months at no cost to users on specific carrier plans.

This aggressive pricing and feature bundling underscore the fierce competition among leading AI providers vying for dominance in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing digital markets.
