Google Expands AI Travel Tools Globally with Flight Deals and Canvas

Google is significantly enhancing its travel planning and booking capabilities within Search, rolling out new AI-powered features globally. The tech giant recently announced the worldwide expansion of its popular AI-driven 'Flight Deals' tool, alongside introducing the 'Canvas' tool for organizing itineraries in AI Mode, and broadening access to agentic booking features for more users.

Global Reach for AI-Powered Flight Deals

Initially launched in August for users in the U.S., Canada, and India, Google's 'Flight Deals' tool is now available globally. This AI-powered search feature, integrated within Google Flights, aims to help travelers quickly discover affordable destinations and the best available bargains. To use it, users simply describe their travel preferences—where, when, and how they wish to travel—and the AI will present optimized flight options.

The global rollout extends to over 200 countries and territories worldwide, including major markets like the U.K., France, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, and Korea. Furthermore, the 'Flight Deals' tool now supports more than 60 languages, making it accessible to a much wider international audience.

Introducing Canvas for Comprehensive Travel Planning

Among the new AI Mode features, Google has integrated its 'Canvas' tool to streamline travel planning. Previously used for creating study plans and organizing information across multiple sessions, Canvas now empowers users to build detailed travel itineraries. Users initiate the process by describing their desired trip type to AI Mode and then selecting the 'Create with Canvas' option.

As Google explained in a blog post, "Right away, you'll get a plan in the Canvas side panel that brings together real-time Search data for flights and hotels, details from Google Maps like photos and reviews and relevant information from sites across the web." This integrated approach provides suggestions tailored to user criteria, such as hotel comparisons based on pricing and amenities, or optimized recommendations for restaurants and activities considering travel time from their accommodation. Users can also engage in follow-up questions and receive assistance with trade-offs, like balancing proximity to a desired restaurant with distance to hiking trails.

Currently, travel planning with Canvas is available on desktop in the U.S. for users who have opted into the AI Mode experiment within Google Labs.

Expanded Agentic Booking Capabilities

In addition to the travel planning tools, Google is making its AI Mode's agentic capabilities accessible to a broader user base. Earlier this year, these features allowed Labs users to book restaurant reservations, event tickets, and beauty and wellness appointments. Now, this functionality is being extended to all users across the U.S.

Users can request dinner reservations by specifying multiple preferences, including party size, date, time, location, and preferred cuisine. AI Mode then searches various reservation platforms to find real-time availability at matching restaurants, presenting a curated list of options. Looking ahead, Google plans to enable direct booking of flights and hotels within AI Mode, allowing users to compare options, browse schedules, prices, room photos, amenities, and reviews seamlessly.
