Meta is pushing forward with its ambitious metaverse vision, recently unveiling a suite of advanced AI-powered tools designed to simplify the creation of immersive 3D environments and objects. These innovations aim to make virtual reality (VR) experiences more accessible and interactive, allowing users to generate complex digital worlds and objects with unprecedented ease, bringing the company closer to its goal of a fully realized metaverse.

The latest advancements include an updated Segment Anything (SAM) process, which now features SAM 3D. This tool is capable of rendering digital 3D objects directly from still image depictions. Complementing this, Meta has also expanded access to its Hyperscape capture process, which allows users to re-create real-world environments within a VR setting.

Hyperscape, first previewed at Meta’s Connect event last September, empowers users to capture physical spaces by scanning them with the cameras integrated into their Quest headsets. This scanned data can then be transformed into an immersive digital replica, where a user's Meta avatar can interact, either through VR or via the Horizon mobile app.

A significant new social feature now enables users to invite others, represented by their avatars, to join them in these personalized 3D spaces. As Meta explains:

“Once your world is ready, hit the ‘invite’ or ‘share’ button to generate a link that you can share through Chats or any messaging platform, including via WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. Up to eight people can join the same instance of the world right now, and we hope to increase that to more people in the future.”

This means anyone with a newer Quest headset or the Horizon app can now enter a user's re-created 3D environment, which can be any scanned scene or location. For instance, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg famously scanned a UFC octagon, showcasing the potential for diverse virtual settings.

The combination of Hyperscape for environment creation and SAM 3D for adding detailed objects provides a robust toolkit for building VR experiences. Furthermore, Meta's Horizon Worlds Desktop Editor enhances this by enabling users to generate 3D environments using conversational AI, adding another layer of intuitive creation.

While Meta's metaverse push appeared to slow down following initial negative responses to its early VR models, the company remains committed to building the next stage of digital connection. Despite a recent shift in focus towards AI, these new generative AI models are integral to the broader metaverse vision.

Meta has been developing machine learning models for over a decade, long before generative AI became a mainstream topic. The company's strategic pivot to emphasize "AI" is a move to maximize opportunities and address emerging competition. Crucially, these advanced AI capabilities directly contribute to the metaverse by facilitating more diverse creation and richer interaction within VR environments.

However, the widespread adoption of VR headsets remains a critical hurdle. The industry is still awaiting a "killer VR application" that will drive mass consumer uptake. While Meta's VR experiences are expanding, there isn't yet a single game, app, or social element that fundamentally changes the landscape or justifies the investment for a broader audience.

Although Meta Quest unit sales are growing, many prospective buyers are likely holding off, anticipating the next Quest model or a truly groundbreaking experience. Nevertheless, these new creative tools are vital pieces of the puzzle. By empowering users to build their own VR environments and experiences, Meta is expanding the possibilities for that "next-level" innovation that will make VR a mainstream consideration.

This future may still be some time away, but it is on the horizon. Meta's continued focus on VR interaction as the evolution of online activity is strategic. As younger generations, accustomed to interacting via digital avatars in game worlds, grow up, their familiarity with and comfort in these virtual experiences will be the catalyst for the metaverse's true potential.
