Alan Dye, the influential design executive who spearheaded Apple's user interface (UI) team for the past decade, is making a high-profile move to Meta, according to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This significant executive shift sees Dye bringing his extensive experience to Meta's burgeoning consumer device division, with a specific focus on artificial intelligence (AI) integration.
The recruitment of Dye marks a strategic coup for Meta, which is aggressively expanding its footprint in consumer hardware, including smart glasses and virtual reality (VR) headsets. Dye is slated to play a pivotal role in enhancing the AI capabilities embedded within these devices, reporting directly to Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth.
Meanwhile, Apple has announced Steve Lemay as Dye's successor. According to a statement from Apple CEO Tim Cook to Bloomberg, Lemay has been instrumental in the design of every major Apple interface since 1999, ensuring continuity in the company's renowned design philosophy.
This move underscores Meta's aggressive strategy to bolster its AI talent pool by recruiting from competitors. Earlier this summer, Meta successfully poached several researchers from OpenAI, intensifying the ongoing 'AI race' among tech giants. Notably, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly went to extraordinary lengths, personally delivering homemade soup to an OpenAI employee as part of a recruitment effort. In a lighthearted response, OpenAI chief research officer Mark Chen later claimed to have reciprocated, delivering his own soup to promising Meta recruits.
