French AI powerhouse Mistral AI has significantly expanded its offerings with the launch of Devstral 2, a new generation of its AI model tailored for coding, and Mistral Vibe, a command-line interface (CLI) designed for natural language-driven code automation. These strategic introductions signal Mistral's aggressive push to catch up with and compete against larger, well-established AI laboratories like Anthropic.

The release of Devstral 2 follows closely on the heels of the Mistral 3 family of open-weight models, reinforcing the company's commitment to challenging its better-funded rivals in the AI space.

Introducing Devstral 2: Power and Accessibility for Coders

Devstral 2, Mistral's flagship coding AI model, boasts 123 billion parameters and is engineered for production-grade workflows. Its demanding nature requires at least four H100 GPUs or equivalent hardware for deployment. The model is released under a modified MIT license.

Recognizing the need for broader accessibility, Mistral also offers Devstral Small. This more compact version, with 24 billion parameters, is designed to be deployable locally on consumer hardware and operates under an Apache 2.0 license.

Both models will be available via Mistral's API. Devstral 2 is currently free to use for an initial period, after which it will be priced at $0.40 per million input tokens and $2.00 per million output tokens. Devstral Small offers a more economical option at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.30 per million output tokens.

Mistral Vibe: Riding the "Vibe-Coding" Wave

Mistral is also entering the burgeoning "vibe-coding" arena with Mistral Vibe, a new CLI that facilitates code automation through natural language. This trend has seen the rise of companies like Cursor and Supabase. Mistral Vibe offers a suite of tools for file manipulation, code searching, version control, and command execution, all driven by natural language prompts.

A key differentiator for Mistral Vibe is its emphasis on context awareness, a feature particularly valuable in business applications. Similar to Mistral's AI assistant, Le Chat, which can remember previous conversations to inform its responses, Vibe CLI maintains persistent history. It can also scan file structures and Git statuses to build comprehensive context, enabling more intelligent and relevant behavior.

Strategic Partnerships and Market Valuation

To ensure widespread adoption, Mistral has partnered with agent tools Kilo Code and Cline for the release of Devstral 2. Mistral Vibe CLI is available as an extension within the Zed integrated development environment (IDE).

These launches come as Mistral AI, often hailed as Europe's leading AI lab, continues its rapid ascent. The company recently secured a Series C funding round led by Dutch semiconductor giant ASML, which invested €1.3 billion (approximately $1.5 billion) in September. This funding round propelled Mistral's valuation to an impressive €11.7 billion (approximately $13.8 billion), solidifying its unicorn status and competitive position in the global AI landscape.
