Mobileye, a leader in automotive computer vision and autonomous driving systems, has announced a significant strategic move into the burgeoning field of humanoid robotics. The Intel subsidiary is set to acquire Mentee Robotics, a startup co-founded by Mobileye president Amnon Shashua, in a deal valued at $900 million. This acquisition, unveiled during CES in Las Vegas, marks what Shashua terms "Mobileye 3.0," signaling a bold expansion into physical artificial intelligence.
Acquisition Details and Financials
Under the terms of the agreement, Mobileye will purchase Mentee Robotics for approximately $612 million in cash, supplemented by up to 26.2 million shares of common stock. Mentee Robotics, a startup co-founded by Shashua in 2022, is developing advanced humanoid robots. Due to his dual role as chairman, co-founder, and significant shareholder of Mentee, Shashua recused himself from Mobileye's board deliberations and approval process for the transaction. The deal, which received approval from both Mobileye's board and its largest shareholder, Intel, is anticipated to finalize in the first quarter of the year. Mobileye expects the acquisition to modestly increase its operating expenses in 2026 by a low-single-digit percentage.
Strategic Vision: Mobileye 3.0 and Physical AI
Mobileye's foray into humanoid robotics is a deliberate step towards what it calls "Physical Artificial Intelligence." This vision aims to extend the company's established expertise in understanding context and intent from the automotive realm to robots that can interact naturally with humans and the physical world.
"Today marks a new chapter for robotics and automotive AI, and the beginning of Mobileye 3.0," Shashua stated. "By combining Mentee’s breakthroughs in humanoid robotics with Mobileye’s expertise in automotive autonomy, and its proven ability to productize advanced AI, we have a unique opportunity to lead the evolution of physical AI across robotics and autonomous vehicles on a global scale."
Mentee Robotics will operate as an independent unit within Mobileye, though significant collaboration and overlap are expected given Shashua's instrumental role in both entities.
Funding and Future Prospects
The development and eventual mass production of humanoid robots represent a substantial financial undertaking. Mobileye appears well-positioned to fund this ambitious venture, citing a robust automotive revenue pipeline of $24.5 billion over the next eight years. This figure represents a more than 40% increase compared to January 2023, underscoring the company's strong financial health. Mentee Robotics stands to gain immensely from this acquisition, accessing Mobileye's extensive resources, including its advanced AI training infrastructure and computational power.
Recent Business Momentum
This acquisition announcement follows closely on the heels of another significant customer win for Mobileye. The company recently revealed that a "top 10 automaker" has committed to purchasing 9 million of its EyeQ6H-based Surround ADAS systems, designed for hands-off advanced driver assistance. This deal, combined with Volkswagen Group's earlier decision to utilize the same chip, brings Mobileye's estimated future delivery of EyeQ6H-based Surround systems to over 19 million units, reinforcing its leadership in automotive autonomy.
