Oboe, the innovative learning startup co-founded by former Anchor executives and Spotify alumni Nir Zicherman and Michael Mignano, has announced a successful Series A funding round, securing $16 million. The round was led by prominent venture capital firm a16z, with continued participation from existing investors Eniac, Haystack, Offline, and Factorial. Notable individual investors, including Adam D’Angelo, Garry Tan, Lenny Rachitsky, Mati Staniszewski, Mikey Shulman, Jared Hecht, and M.G. Siegler, also contributed to the round.
This significant investment comes just three months after Oboe’s official launch last September and approximately a year after it raised a $4 million seed round. The platform, which leverages artificial intelligence to generate personalized courses based on user-defined learning goals, is now set to accelerate its growth and expand its reach.
Fueling Growth and Expanding Reach
Nir Zicherman, Oboe’s co-founder, emphasized the strategic importance of the new funding. "We want to reach billions of people who want to learn about new topics, and it is a very big opportunity," Zicherman told TechCrunch. "We need to execute faster and reach a larger audience at scale to achieve this vision." He added that the team's strong background in building successful consumer products provides a competitive edge in the market.
Bryan Kim, a partner at a16z, expressed his admiration for Oboe's rapid content generation capabilities. "We have had a thesis around how AI-aided learning can help people explore new topics and have been looking for the right company," Kim explained. "After Oboe launched, we tried it and loved the product. We wanted to back a founder who was ambitious, flexible in adopting different form factors, and understood AI to build a big platform. We found that in Oboe."
Revolutionizing the Learning Experience with AI
Oboe is also rolling out substantial enhancements to its core course generation experience. Previously, the platform offered varied text and audio formats and capped course generation based on payment plans. The updated version introduces a more structured and intuitive approach:
- Chapter-Based Learning: The app now first understands a user's learning goal, then generates a series of chapters to systematically cover the topic.
- Integrated Modalities: Users will seamlessly encounter quizzes and flashcards embedded within the course material, aiding retention and comprehension.
- Dynamic Audio: Instead of fixed podcast or lecture formats, Oboe now generates a personalized podcast, adjusting its tone based on the learning material and user signals.
Zicherman highlighted a strong user demand for STEM topics, including programming. Oboe has focused on sourcing high-quality material for these areas, aiming to emulate the pedagogical approach of effective teachers who design courses optimally for learners.
New Pricing Model: Unlimited Free Courses and Premium Tiers
In a significant shift, Oboe is revamping its pricing model to offer unlimited course generation to all users for free. For those seeking to delve deeper into subjects, the platform introduces tiered subscriptions:
- Standard Plan: For $15 per month (or $144 annually), users gain access to more course chapters.
- Pro Plan: Priced at $40 per month (or $384 annually), this plan offers unlimited chapter access and the ability to export or download courses for offline consumption, ideal for students who prefer printouts or offline study.
Currently, Oboe's courses are available in English via its web platform, with future plans to introduce localized courses and language support to reach a global audience. Mobile support is also in development.
While other tools like Google's NotebookLM and Huxe allow users to generate one-off podcast episodes from prompts, Oboe distinguishes itself by providing a comprehensive, chapter-based learning journey for in-depth topic exploration.
