Reddit announced on Thursday that its AI-powered search capabilities represent an "enormous" opportunity, not just as a product enhancement but as a significant future revenue driver. During its fourth-quarter earnings call, the social media giant provided an update on its plans to integrate traditional and AI search, hinting at substantial monetization potential within this burgeoning market.
Reddit's Vision for AI-Powered Search
CEO Steve Huffman emphasized Reddit's unique strength in handling complex queries. "There’s a type of query we’re, I think, particularly good at — I would argue, the best on the internet — which is questions that have no answers, where the answer actually is multiple perspectives from lots of people," Huffman stated. He believes generative AI search will be "better for most queries" compared to traditional methods.
While traditional search often serves as navigation to specific links or subreddits, Huffman noted that Large Language Models (LLMs) could perform this function equally well, if not better, signaling the company's strategic direction.
Impressive User Growth and Future Enhancements
The company reported impressive growth in its search user base. Weekly active users for search climbed 30% over the past year, from 60 million to 80 million. Even more notably, the AI-powered Reddit Answers saw a dramatic increase, growing from 1 million weekly active users in Q1 2025 to 15 million by Q4 2025. Huffman highlighted this surge, adding, "We’re seeing a lot of growth there, and I think there’s a lot of potential too."
Reddit is actively working to modernize the Reddit Answers interface, aiming for more media-rich responses, with pilot programs already in progress. The platform is also evolving its identity beyond a social site, aspiring to be a primary destination for answers. To achieve this, Reddit plans to eliminate the distinction between logged-in and logged-out users starting in Q3 2026, leveraging AI and machine learning to personalize the site experience for every visitor.
Significant progress has been made in unifying its core search with its AI feature, a plan initially announced in 2025. The company has also expanded Reddit Answers to five new languages and is piloting dynamic agents alongside search results that incorporate "media beyond text."
Expanding Beyond Search: Content Licensing
Beyond direct user engagement, Reddit is also capitalizing on its vast data through a growing content licensing business. This initiative allows other companies to train their AI models using Reddit's extensive content. Reported under Reddit’s "other" revenues (non-ad revenue), this segment saw an 8% year-over-year increase in Q4, reaching $36 million, and a 22% rise for the full year 2025, totaling $140 million.
