As global tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic push the boundaries of large language models, a new wave of startups is carving out specialized niches. Among them, Tokyo-based Sakana AI is making significant strides, particularly in the Japanese market, by developing tailored AI solutions.

The company recently announced the successful closure of a ¥20 billion (approximately $135 million) Series B funding round. This latest investment boosts Sakana AI's post-money valuation to an impressive $2.65 billion, up from a pre-money valuation of $2.5 billion, as confirmed by CEO David Ha.

Building AI for Japan's Unique Needs

Founded in 2023 by former Google researchers Llion Jones, Ren Ito, and David Ha, Sakana AI focuses on creating affordable generative AI models. These models are designed to perform effectively with smaller datasets and are specifically optimized for the nuances of the Japanese language and culture. This approach positions Sakana AI distinctly from the broader race to build massive, general-purpose AI models.

Diverse Investor Backing and Strategic Growth

The Series B round attracted a robust mix of investors, combining Japan's financial powerhouses with prominent global venture capital firms. Key participants include Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Khosla Ventures, Macquarie Capital, NEA, Lux Capital, and In-Q-Tel (IQT).

CEO David Ha outlined the company's plans for the new capital, stating, "We plan to deploy the new capital for not only R&D, including [AI] model development, but also to expand our workforce for engineering, sales, and distribution teams in Japan." Sakana AI has already strengthened its presence in Japan this year through collaborations with leading local enterprises such as Daiwa and MUFG, alongside developing innovative AI solutions.

Ha, who brings extensive experience from his previous roles at Stability AI, Google, and Goldman Sachs, also revealed Sakana AI's ambitious expansion strategy. By 2026, the company aims to broaden its enterprise business beyond the finance sector into industrial, manufacturing, and government domains. Looking further ahead, the two-year-old startup is actively exploring opportunities in the defense, intelligence, and manufacturing sectors. Sakana AI also plans to "actively pursue strategic investment, partnerships, and M&A for long-term global growth."

Pioneering Sovereign AI Solutions

Sakana AI emphasizes a strong global demand for "sovereign AI solutions" that authentically reflect national cultures and values. The Japanese startup believes that by concentrating its R&D efforts on refining AI products after initial LLM training, it can efficiently build advanced models precisely tailored for Japan. This strategy allows them to forge a unique path, distinct from the prevailing large-scale AI model development race.

This latest funding round follows approximately a year after Sakana AI's Series A round, where it secured about ¥30 billion ($214 million) at a $1.5 billion valuation. According to PitchBook, the company had raised roughly $244 million in total as of March 2025, bringing its cumulative funding to approximately $379 million with the completion of this Series B.
