Spotify has announced a significant step towards giving users more control over its music recommendation algorithm with the introduction of "Prompted Playlists." This new AI-powered feature, initially available to Premium subscribers in New Zealand, allows users to generate highly personalized playlists by simply describing what they want to hear. The move represents an evolution in personalized music discovery, aiming to make playlists feel as if they were curated specifically for each individual's unique taste journey.
Enhanced Personalization with AI
Building on its existing AI playlist options, "Prompted Playlists" empower users to craft bespoke listening experiences through written instructions. Unlike previous iterations, this beta feature enables much longer and more specific prompts, allowing for nuanced requests that go beyond simple genre or mood selections. The feature is an evolution from Spotify's existing AI playlist option, which debuted last year.
Key Innovations and Capabilities
The core innovation of Prompted Playlists lies in their advanced personalization capabilities. Spotify explains that the AI behind these playlists factors in "world knowledge" and considers the "full arc" of a user's listening history, stretching back to their very first stream. This comprehensive approach means the playlists aren't just based on current preferences but reflect an individual's evolving musical journey. Additionally, users can schedule how often these dynamic playlists refresh, choosing between daily or weekly updates, a feature that further distinguishes them from other AI-generated offerings.
Crafting Your Perfect Playlist
Spotify provides compelling examples of how users can leverage this new tool. Subscribers could request "music from my top artists from the last five years," then refine it to include "deep cuts I haven't heard yet." For more complex scenarios, prompts like "high-energy pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute 5K run that keeps a steady pace before easing into relaxing songs for a cool-down" or "music from this year's biggest films and most-talked-about TV shows that match my taste" demonstrate the feature's versatility. Users can continuously fine-tune their prompts to achieve even greater specificity.
The idea is that users can essentially make their own version of something like Spotify’s flagship playlist, Discover Weekly, but one that’s focused on a type of music, genre, or time period they’d like to track, or their own version of something like Spotify’s genre-focused Daily Mixes.
To assist users in getting started, the feature will also provide initial prompts and include descriptions and context for recommendations, ensuring transparency in why certain tracks are suggested.
Availability and Broader Trends
Currently in its beta phase and available only in English to Premium subscribers in New Zealand, Spotify plans to evolve "Prompted Playlists" before a wider global rollout. This initiative aligns with a growing trend across various platforms, where companies are increasingly offering users more direct control over their algorithmic feeds. Instagram, for instance, recently introduced tools that let users take control of its algorithm by managing the types of Reels they see, and decentralized platforms like Bluesky allow users to swap out algorithms entirely.
