Voice AI startup Subtle has officially launched its new wireless earbuds, the Voicebuds, designed to revolutionize how users interact with voice technology in noisy environments. Priced at $199, these innovative earbuds promise crystal-clear calls, highly accurate transcription for notes, and seamless AI-powered dictation across various applications, positioning them as a strong contender in the smart audio market.
Advanced Noise Isolation and AI Capabilities
Unveiled just ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Subtle's Voicebuds leverage advanced voice isolation models to ensure users are understood perfectly, even in challenging acoustic settings. The company claims these earbuds deliver transcription with five times fewer errors than a combination of AirPods Pro 3 and OpenAI’s transcription model, a significant leap in accuracy.
The Voicebuds come with a year-long subscription to their dedicated iOS and Mac application. This app enhances functionality by allowing users to take voice notes or engage in AI chats without needing to press any buttons. Furthermore, the earbuds incorporate a specialized chip that can wake a locked iPhone, streamlining hands-free operation.
Competing in the Voice Interface Landscape
Subtle is entering a competitive landscape, aiming to challenge established AI-powered voice dictation apps such as Wispr Flow, Willow, Monolouge, and Superwhisper. By enabling dictation directly into any app via the Voicebuds, Subtle seeks to offer a more integrated and versatile solution.
During a demonstration observed by TechCrunch, the Voicebuds showcased their impressive capability to capture clear audio even amidst significant background noise. The earbuds also successfully transcribed a voice note when Subtle’s co-founder and CEO, Tyler Chen, spoke in a whispering tone, highlighting their sensitivity and precision.
“We are seeing that there is a huge move towards voice as a new interface that a lot of folks are adopting. You can do much more with voice in a natural way than with a keyboard. However, we saw that voice is rarely an interface people use when others are around. So that using our noise isolation model, we will give consumers a way to experience a voice interface in the form of our earbuds,” Chen told TechCrunch.
Chen emphasized Subtle's vision to consolidate functionalities typically found in separate tools—like dictation, AI chat, and voice notes—into a single, cohesive package through the Voicebuds and their accompanying app. This approach also positions them against recent innovations like note-taking rings launched by companies such as Sandbar and Pebble.
Availability and Company Background
The Voicebuds are available for pre-order directly from Subtle’s official website and come in elegant black and white colorways. Subtle plans to begin shipping the earbuds in the U.S. within the next few months.
To date, Subtle has successfully raised $6 million in funding. The company has also been actively collaborating with major consumer technology firms like Qualcomm and Nothing, deploying their advanced noise isolation models into various products.
