X (formerly Twitter) has announced a significant new initiative, inviting users to create and submit AI-generated video clips using its Grok Imagine 1.0 tool. The winning entries will be featured in X's highly anticipated Super Bowl advertisement, with a grand prize of $1 million. This competition aims to showcase the advanced capabilities of xAI's latest video generation technology and boost engagement with X's subscription offerings.

Grok Video Competition Details

The competition, detailed by X's Creators account, offers substantial cash prizes: $1 million for the top video, $500,000 for second place, and $250,000 for third. Participants are tasked with creating an advertisement that highlights Grok's power, humor, truthfulness, or game-changing potential. All submissions must be generated using Grok Imagine 1.0 and be 30 seconds or less in duration.

As per X's guidelines:

“Create an ad that shows off what makes Grok powerful, hilarious, truthful, or game-changing. Your video must be created with Grok Imagine 1.0, be 30 seconds or less.”

The competition is open to all U.S. residents capable of generating video content with Grok. Judging will primarily consider "Verified Home Timeline impressions," though X retains final discretion over selected entries. The submitted videos should be "stylized like a video advertisement run before, during, and after the professional football game slated to be televised on February 8, 2026."

Notably, specific content restrictions include no political commentary and no sexualized content. This latter restriction follows recent controversies surrounding Grok's AI-generated images.

X's Vision for Grok Imagine 1.0

X released its Grok 1.0 video generation engine last week, touting its ability to produce higher-quality, more consistent, and longer video clips, including audio elements. The platform hopes these enhancements will attract more users to its subscription tiers, granting them full access to Grok's diverse functionalities. The Super Bowl promotion is a key part of X's strategy to demonstrate Grok's potential to a massive audience, potentially sparking wider interest in xAI's video tools.

Skepticism and Challenges for AI Video

Despite X's optimism, some observers have expressed skepticism regarding Grok 1.0's current output quality. For instance, X recently commissioned "AI filmmaker" Christopher Fryant to create a short film, "Routine," demonstrating Grok's latest advances. This film, intended to showcase Grok 1.0's capacity, has been described by some as disjointed, featuring odd facial expressions and effects, even when produced by an experienced AI video creator.

Fryant's film, "Routine," can be viewed below:

Massive news: I was commissioned by @xai to create a short film in 2 days using only Grok Imagine 1.0 (stills and video).

So in honor of Groundhog Day, here it is: "Routine" a film about a man in a time loop in suburbia.

The effectiveness of AI-generated content, even with improved tools, often hinges on the underlying creative idea and concept. While Elon Musk and the xAI team are keen to highlight Grok's capabilities, the quality of the output remains a point of discussion.

Rewarding Creators and Boosting Interest

This competition represents another effort by X to reward creators and stimulate content posting on the platform. While the long-term impact on revenue share and creator engagement remains to be seen, X hopes this high-profile, one-off event will encourage more users to experiment with Grok video, thereby fostering broader interest in AI tools for video generation.
