Horizon Media has launched HorizonOS, an open ad tech ecosystem designed to empower clients with greater control over their marketing partnerships. This new platform allows clients to develop tailored marketing products by collaborating with a diverse range of vendors, as announced in a recent press release. Early adopters already leveraging HorizonOS include Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Orkin.

Concurrently with the HorizonOS launch, the independent media agency also unveiled Horizon Labs, a new innovation accelerator. This unit will collaborate with clients to test, validate, and scale emerging capabilities, ranging from generative AI creative tools to advanced measurement systems, aiming to reduce risk in adopting new technologies.

HorizonOS: An Open Alternative to Closed Systems

Horizon Media is positioning HorizonOS as a flexible, open system that offers clients freedom and choice, contrasting it with the often limited and closed systems prevalent among larger holding companies. A key differentiator, according to Horizon, is its emphasis on human intelligence and insight, rather than the automation-first strategies it attributes to its competitors.

“[The holding companies are] building closed systems of machines talking to themselves, eventually delivering the most reductive solutions. We're taking the opposite approach: HorizonOS is designed to bring human expertise and the latest technology to the forefront, creating conditions for co-creation and client growth,” said Bob Lord, president of Horizon Media Holdings, in the release.

The architecture of HorizonOS integrates technology with human intelligence. It utilizes Horizon’s proprietary Blu AI platform for audience strategies, campaign activations, and measurement. Additionally, it incorporates Agent Q, an "internal thought partner" built on Google Gemini and connected to Horizon’s extensive data reserves.

Horizon emphasizes that the true point of differentiation for HorizonOS lies in the human expertise behind the technology. This includes Client Architects who possess deep understanding of business challenges and competitive landscapes, specialized marketing science and advanced analytics teams, and "Product Foundry builders" from the HorizonOS Labs venture.

Horizon Labs Drives Innovation with Clients

The Horizon Labs unit is actively working with clients to develop and implement pilot programs that address specific business challenges. More than 15 clients are currently engaged in these initiatives. For example, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, in collaboration with ZeroToOne through Labs, has developed predictive audience models within the Blu system. Similarly, Orkin is partnering with The Trade Desk to directly link its media investments to strategic business outcomes.

The extensive network of tech partners supporting HorizonOS and HorizonOS Labs includes:

  • Data Companies: ID5, ZeroToOne
  • Activation & Planning: Kargo, Sightly, Vurvey Labs, The Trade Desk
  • Creative & Brand Experiences: Firsthand, Kerv, Smartly, Vidmob
  • Analytics: Newton Research

This launch is part of Horizon Media's broader strategy to reinforce its relevance in the evolving marketing landscape. In a notable move last September, Horizon Media Holdings formed a joint venture with Havas to create Horizon Global. Executives described this entity as the first agency network built in the AI era, promising a "seamless, AI-native experience" for its global clientele.
