The newly independent Magnum Ice Cream Company (TMICC) has officially named Publicis Media as its global media agency of record (AOR). This strategic appointment marks a significant step for the CPG marketer, which recently spun off from Unilever, as it aims to leverage advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven insights to anticipate evolving consumer trends and cultural moments.
The decision follows a competitive pitch process involving several major media agencies. For TMICC, which now operates as a distinct entity from its former parent company, the partnership with Publicis is crucial for solidifying its standalone identity and enhancing its global marketing footprint. The company boasts an extensive portfolio of beloved ice cream brands, including its namesake Magnum line, Ben & Jerry's, Cornetto, Klondike, Talenti, and Wall's, positioning it as the world's largest ice cream maker following its public listing earlier in December.
TMICC emphasized that Publicis's robust capabilities in data and AI were key factors in its selection. The collaboration is designed to provide the ice cream giant with a cutting-edge advantage in understanding and responding to consumer behavior. Tactically, the partnership will focus on dynamic strategies such as occasion-based social media deployments, localized event activations, and real-time digital promotions to engage consumers more effectively across various platforms.
"This is a pivotal step in our transformation journey and will mark a step change in our ability to reach and engage ice cream consumers," said Julien Barraux, chief creative officer at TMICC, in a press statement. "As we move to embed advanced AI technologies across the marketing eco-system and broader value chain, our partnership with Publicis will ensure our marketing is as innovative and data-driven as the rest of our organisation."
The win adds to a series of high-profile successes for Publicis this year. The advertising holding group has consistently highlighted its strengths in AI and data as a primary driver for attracting new business and fostering growth, even as some rivals face challenges. Publicis estimates that approximately 80% of its connected media offerings are now supported by AI. Notable recent victories for Publicis include securing the media and data business for The Coca-Cola Company in North America and the media account for Mars, both of which were previously managed by WPP agencies like Mindshare, which had handled Unilever's ice cream business.
While TMICC's transition into an independent entity has been largely successful, it has not been entirely without its challenges. Ben & Jerry's co-founder Ben Cohen recently described a contentious overhaul of its independent board, which saw the removal of three directors, as "Orwellian" to CNBC. This incident echoes past disagreements between Ben & Jerry's and Unilever regarding the brand's strong stance on social issues and its desire to maintain an independent board structure.
