In a crowded market of AI-driven travel planning tools, a new startup called Boop is carving out a unique niche by transforming authentic social recommendations into readily bookable itineraries. Eschewing generic, AI-generated plans, Boop offers users access to curated travel experiences shared by real people who have actually taken those trips.

Revolutionizing Travel Planning with Social Trust

Boop's innovative approach leverages artificial intelligence to streamline the creation of personalized itineraries. When a user embarks on a journey and shares photos or location data with the app, Boop's AI swiftly converts their trip details into a shareable itinerary. This system aims to foster a network of shared travel guides, providing travel creators with a new avenue to monetize their recommendations and expertise.

The concept for Boop originated with founder Nancy Li Smith, a veteran of AR/VR innovation at Meta and Microsoft, and former executive vice president at BrightAI. Smith recognized a personal need for a more efficient way to remember and share her own travel recommendations. Beyond personal convenience, she sought to alleviate the significant stress and "emotional labor" often associated with travel planning, particularly for women, who are estimated to make approximately 80% of travel decisions and frequently feel immense pressure to ensure every trip is perfect.

"Women are majority of the time the planner in the relationship and in the family and the friends groups," Smith told TechCrunch. "There's this pressure to make every trip amazing, not only for yourself or your partner, for your family, for your friends. All these years of the emotional and logistical labor for free. Boop is now solving this so that we can capture this easily without people doing anything."

Instead of endlessly scrolling through social media for tips, sifting through countless reviews, or pinning ideas across multiple platforms, Boop users can access verified and beloved itineraries from trusted creators and friends. This dramatically simplifies the planning process, allowing users to copy a friend's real Tokyo or Paris trip itinerary and personalize it with AI assistance in minutes.

How Boop Captures and Curates Trips

When users opt to "capture" a trip, the Boop app tracks their movements in the background, similar to a fitness tracker, provided they grant the necessary permissions. The company assures that Boop's AI utilizes location data solely for trip capture and recommendation purposes. For instance, if a user expresses interest in art and is in Paris's 11th arrondissement, Boop might suggest a visit to Atelier des Lumières. Future enhancements include integrating with users' calendars, with permission, to automatically incorporate existing reservations into their itineraries.

Smith highlights Boop's utility not just for pre-trip planning, but also for spontaneous decisions while traveling. Imagine being in Tokyo at 11 PM, seeking an impromptu activity; Boop can offer recommendations tailored to your tastes and your friends' suggestions.

Monetization for Travel Creators and Strategic Partnerships

Boop is designed to empower travel creators to earn from their shared experiences. Creators can share their itineraries with followers via a "Boop with me" link, which includes integrated affiliate links. When followers book through these links, Boop automatically integrates affiliate commission APIs from industry partners. Smith explains that Boop generates the industry standard of 10% to 25% commissions, with half of that revenue going directly to the creators.

"With each copy, that means 50 to 100 bucks. And if you're an influencer with 100,000 followers, and you have 100 people copying this, it becomes a five [or] six figure income down the road," Smith stated.

The platform works with major hotel and experience affiliate aggregation companies, utilizing APIs to access booking inventory from prominent platforms such as Expedia, Booking.com, Marriott, and Viator.

Funding and Vision for the Future

Boop successfully secured $3.2 million in pre-seed funding in May, co-led by BBG Ventures and Lynn Capital. The startup benefits from the backing of seasoned leaders from the travel industry, including Stephen Kaufer, co-founder and former CEO of Tripadvisor, and Stephanie Linnartz, former president of Marriott International, who bring invaluable expertise in travel and consumer behavior.

Boop officially launched on Tuesday on mobile, currently operating on an invite-only basis. Interested users can join a public waitlist for early access. The company is prioritizing early access for select travel creators whose trips are already highly sought after.

Looking ahead, Boop aims to become the definitive platform for booking travel, especially as research indicates that Gen Z increasingly views travel as a fundamental rather than discretionary expense. Smith envisions a future where, instead of saying "check the reviews" when planning a trip, people will say, "copy my Boop."

"Every real trip becomes a guide, and every memory becomes a new currency," Smith concluded, encapsulating Boop's ambitious vision.
