Walmart-backed fintech giant PhonePe has announced the shutdown of its Pincode e-commerce app, signaling a strategic retreat from India's highly competitive online retail market. Launched just over a year ago, Pincode aimed to revolutionize hyperlocal quick commerce but ultimately struggled to gain traction. PhonePe will now pivot its resources towards expanding its B2B services, focusing on empowering offline merchants across India.

Sameer Nigam, PhonePe founder and group CEO, stated on Thursday that operating a consumer-facing quick-commerce app had become a "distraction" from the company’s primary objective: supporting small retailers. Instead, PhonePe intends to concentrate on helping these stores "achieve operational efficiency, improved margins and visibility" through its B2B offerings.

Pincode's Brief Journey in E-commerce

PhonePe launched Pincode in April 2023 as a significant foray into e-commerce, building it on the Indian government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). The hyperlocal app initially offered a wide array of products, including groceries, medicines, food, electronics, and home décor from neighborhood shops, starting in Bengaluru and later expanding to other major cities.

However, within little over a year, Pincode retreated from most categories except food. Earlier this year, the app shifted to a quick-commerce model, promising 10-minute deliveries through local kirana shops and retailers in cities like Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Pune. This model, which utilized existing local shops rather than dark stores favored by rivals such as Swiggy, Zomato-owned Blinkit, and Zepto, failed to help Pincode gain significant market share in the crowded segment, ultimately leading to its shutdown.

This isn't PhonePe's first venture into e-commerce. In 2019, the company introduced "Switch," a super-app layer within its payments application, providing access to various services including food, grocery, shopping, and travel.

Pivoting to B2B Solutions for Offline Merchants

With Pincode now officially shut down and its website redirected to PhonePe's main site, the company is fully committing to its B2B expansion. Vivek Lohcheb, CEO of Pincode, confirmed this strategic pivot in a prepared statement:

"As part of this strategic decision, we will now focus the entire Pincode team’s resources towards accelerating the build-out and scale-up of a suite of B2B business solutions for offline businesses across India."

PhonePe already offers inventory and order-management tools, along with other ERP software for small businesses, and provides direct sourcing and replenishment services in certain categories. In July, PhonePe reported digitizing over 1,000 local stores across Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Varanasi through Pincode, equipping them with digital storefronts, inventory tools, and last-mile delivery services.

Broader Strategic Context and IPO Plans

This strategic realignment comes as PhonePe prepares for a public listing in India, nearly three years after its spin-off from Flipkart. The company filed draft papers with the Securities and Exchange Board of India via a confidential pre-filing route in September, targeting a mid-2026 listing. PhonePe is also actively seeking avenues for growth beyond its dominant position as India's leading payments app on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

PhonePe declined to respond to detailed inquiries regarding Pincode’s performance and the specific timing of the app’s shutdown.
