Shopify experienced a significant outage on Cyber Monday, a critical day for online retail, which temporarily prevented thousands of merchants from processing transactions. The popular e-commerce platform has since announced that the issue has been identified and resolved.
The disruption began around 6:45 a.m. PT, impacting merchants who reported difficulties logging into their Shopify accounts and accessing point-of-sale (POS) systems. This effectively halted their ability to complete sales during one of the busiest online shopping periods of the year.
The timing of the outage was particularly problematic, coinciding with Cyber Monday, when customers are actively seeking deals. Shopify is a cornerstone for millions of businesses, facilitating over 10% of all U.S. e-commerce transactions, making any platform instability a major concern for online retailers.
According to Shopify's status page, the company pinpointed the cause of the problem as an issue within its login authentication flow, which also explained the POS login complications. Shopify confirmed it has remedied the situation and is now seeing signs of recovery, though it continues to monitor the platform.
While the exact number of affected merchants remains undisclosed by Shopify, Downdetector, a service that tracks user-submitted reports of website issues, noted approximately 4,000 outage incidents. The company also advised merchants that its Help Center was experiencing longer-than-normal wait times due to the high volume of inquiries stemming from the disruption.
