OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and renowned designer Jony Ive are collaborating on a new AI hardware device, which Altman describes as a more "peaceful and calm" alternative to the ubiquitous iPhone. Teased as a simple, distraction-free computing experience, the device is expected to launch within two years, aiming to redefine user interaction with technology.

The project stems from OpenAI's acquisition of Ive's design startup, io, earlier this year, a move intended to bring advanced AI to the masses through innovative gadgetry. While specific details remain under wraps, the device is rumored to be screenless and pocket-sized.

A Vision for Calm Computing

Altman and Ive recently shared insights into their vision during an interview led by Laurene Powell Jobs at Emerson Collective's 9th annual Demo Day in San Francisco. Though the device is currently a prototype, their discussion focused heavily on its intended "vibe" rather than technical specifications.

Altman, who once hailed the iPhone as the "crowning achievement of consumer products," now criticizes modern technology for its inherent distractions. He vividly compared the experience of using current devices to "walking through Times Square in New York and constantly just dealing with all the little indignities along the way — flashing lights in my face…people bumping into me, like noise is going off, and it’s an unsettling thing." He believes that constant notifications and dopamine-driven social apps detract from a peaceful existence.

"I don’t think it’s making any of our lives peaceful and calm and just letting us focus on our stuff," Altman stated.

In stark contrast, Altman envisions their new AI device offering a user experience akin to "sitting in the most beautiful cabin by a lake and in the mountains and sort of just enjoying the peace and calm." This device, he explained, would intelligently filter information, presenting it only when most relevant, and would build user trust through its "incredible contextual awareness of your whole life."

Simplicity and Intuitive Design

Jony Ive echoed Altman's emphasis on simplicity and intuitive interaction. He expressed his admiration for "solutions that teeter on appearing almost naive in their simplicity" and for "incredibly intelligent, sophisticated products that you want to touch, and you feel no intimidation, and you want to use almost carelessly — that you use them almost without thought — that they’re just tools."

The collaboration between OpenAI's AI prowess and Ive's minimalist design philosophy aims to create a device that seamlessly integrates into daily life without demanding constant attention. Ive confirmed at the event that the device is slated for release in under two years.
