Pocket Casts, the popular podcast application owned by Automattic (the parent company of Tumblr), has rolled out a highly anticipated new feature: custom podcast playlists. This update empowers users to meticulously organize their favorite podcast episodes, curating a personalized listening experience tailored to their preferences.
The new playlist functionality allows listeners to arrange episodes in any desired order, offering both manual creation and automated "Smart Playlists." This move is a strategic effort by Pocket Casts to enhance user engagement, grow its paid subscriber base, and intensify its competition with larger platforms in the crowded podcasting landscape.
This feature significantly simplifies the process of curating audio content. Users can now easily build collections based on specific topics, themes, or even compile episodes featuring a favorite guest across various shows. It's also ideal for preparing a seamless listening queue for long flights, daily commutes, or any occasion where uninterrupted audio is desired.
Creating a manual playlist is straightforward. Users can navigate to the "Playlists" tab on the main screen and select the "+" icon on mobile devices or "New playlist" on the web version. From there, browsing existing podcasts and handpicking episodes for inclusion in a personalized queue is intuitive.
For those seeking a more automated approach, Pocket Casts offers "Smart Playlists." By utilizing the "Smart rules" button, users can define custom criteria to automatically gather episodes. For instance, listeners can set rules to include only shorter episodes (e.g., under 25 minutes) or filter content by unplayed or downloaded status. This intelligent filtering is particularly beneficial for busy individuals looking to maximize their listening time efficiently.
The playlist feature is currently available on the Pocket Casts web version and desktop applications, with a gradual rollout for Android users already in progress. iOS device compatibility is expected to follow soon.
This update follows Pocket Casts' earlier decision to make its web player free, further solidifying its position as a strong contender in the podcasting space. By continuously enhancing its offerings and removing paywalls for core features, Pocket Casts aims to attract more users and compete effectively against major platforms that often restrict content access.
