Just one month after implementing mandatory facial verification for chat access, Roblox announced that 45% of its daily active users had completed age checks by January 31. This significant rollout follows a series of child safety lawsuits and reports highlighting risks to young users on the popular online gaming platform.
The Drive for Enhanced Child Safety
Roblox's push for mandatory age verification came in the wake of legal challenges from attorneys general in states like Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana. These lawsuits were filed in response to reports and investigations alleging that Roblox was exposing its younger users to serious dangers, including grooming and explicit content.
How Roblox's Age Verification Works
To complete the age verification process, users must open the Roblox app, grant camera access, and follow a series of on-screen instructions for facial verification. Roblox states that all images and videos captured during this process are deleted immediately after the age check is completed. The verification is handled by a third-party vendor, Persona, which also confirms the deletion of user data post-verification.
Age-Based Chat System
Once verified, users gain access to age-based chat, restricting their communication to others within similar age brackets. Roblox has established six age groups:
- Under 9
- 9 to 12
- 13 to 15
- 16 to 17
- 18 to 20
- 21 plus
Users can chat with individuals in their own group, as well as those in the directly adjacent groups. For instance, a user in the 9-12 category can communicate with peers in the under 9 and 13-15 groups.
Appeals and Continuous Monitoring
Should the facial verification system incorrectly estimate a user's age, an appeal process is available. Users can verify their age through alternative methods, such as ID verification, or parents can update their child's age via parental controls.
Concerns about potential loopholes, such as reports of age-verified Roblox accounts for minors being sold on platforms like eBay (which have since been removed), have been addressed by the company. Eliza Jacobs, Roblox's Senior Director of Product Policy, explained that the platform employs continuous background age check systems to prevent abuse.
"We look to see if there are any signals on your account that indicate that the age that we now have on that account is not consistent with the activity on that account. Whether that's the kinds of games you're playing, or who you're talking to. We also have key stroke analysis. The way adults type is different from the way kids type. So [we have] lots of systems running in the background to ensure that the age is accurate to the person actually using the account. And if we have any reason to believe that it's not accurate, we will introduce additional checks to make sure that we have it right."
Jacobs also noted that Roblox analyzes emoji usage patterns, as older generations often use emojis as punctuation at the end of sentences, while younger users frequently embed them mid-sentence.
Demographic Insights and Growth Strategy
During its Q4 2025 earnings release, Roblox revealed that age-checked data indicates a younger user base than previously suggested by self-reported data, an outcome the company had anticipated. Of the 45% of users who have completed age checks:
- 35% are under 13
- 38% are between 13 and 17
- 27% are over 18
Beyond safety, Roblox CEO and co-founder David Baszucki highlighted the financial implications of this data. He stated that the age verification process has uncovered a larger growth opportunity within the 18-plus demographic than initially assumed.
"We estimate our 18 and over cohort is growing at over 50%, and this cohort monetizes 40% higher than younger cohorts."
Baszucki added that Roblox is actively optimizing its platform to foster the growth of high-revenue genres popular with older users, such as shooters, RPGs, sports, and racing games.
Roblox affirms its commitment to continuously enhancing its safety measures to adapt to evolving online risks and user needs, ensuring a secure and engaging environment for its diverse global audience.
