Meta's standalone video editing application, Edits, is rolling out its final major update of the year, introducing a suite of powerful new features. Headlining these additions are advanced AI-powered effects that allow users to apply visual enhancements to specific people or objects within a video clip, alongside the ability to incorporate public Reels into projects, updated title options, and enhanced storyboarding tools.
Advanced AI Segmentation: The Power of SAM
The cornerstone of this update is the integration of new AI video effects, powered by Meta's innovative "Segment Anything" (SAM) model. SAM is renowned for its ability to precisely separate distinct objects within a video frame. Now, Edits users can leverage this technology to isolate and apply effects like blur, highlight, or sparkle to individual elements in their clips.
This capability significantly enhances creative control, allowing for more dynamic and professional-looking edits without requiring specialized video editing expertise. Marketers, in particular, will find value in the new option to add tags to specific items in a video, which will intelligently track and move with the object as it appears on screen.
Expanded Creative Tools and Collaboration
Beyond AI segmentation, Edits is expanding its collaborative and planning functionalities. Users can now seamlessly integrate publicly posted Reels directly into their Edits projects, opening up new possibilities for reaction videos, remixes, and creative mashups. To further streamline the creative process, the app's Storyboards functionality has been updated, offering more robust tools for planning and structuring video narratives.
Meta has also introduced new title options, providing additional presentation styles to help content stand out. Complementing these visual enhancements are 150 new sound effects and a selection of New Year's-themed font options, along with new font style presets and the ability to apply different styles to specific words within captions.
These extensive additions offer a wealth of new options for video creators looking to customize and refine their clips, especially heading into the holiday season. For now, the Edits app remains free to use.
However, Meta has previously indicated that it may eventually introduce charges for certain elements of Edits, particularly as it aims to compete more directly with popular alternatives like ByteDance's CapCut. Therefore, exploring the app's current offerings now could provide valuable insight before any potential shift to a paid model.
