Rockstar Games' acclaimed Western epic, Red Dead Redemption, has officially joined the Netflix gaming catalog, making its debut on iOS and Android devices. This marks the first time the iconic title is natively available for mobile players, accessible to all Netflix subscribers.
Launched on Tuesday, the mobile version of Red Dead Redemption is optimized for touchscreens, featuring intuitive controls for shooting and navigation. Players will step into the boots of former outlaw John Marston in 1911, as he embarks on a quest to find his kidnapped family across the Wild West. The mobile release also includes the popular standalone expansion pack, "Undead Nightmare," which sees Marston confronting a zombie outbreak.
It's important to note that the game is a single-player experience and requires an active internet connection to play; offline gameplay is not supported.
Netflix's Evolving Gaming Strategy
This significant addition underscores Netflix's deepening commitment to its gaming strategy. The streaming giant has previously faced challenges with subscriber engagement in its gaming offerings, with less than 1% of its user base interacting with available titles in earlier years. However, 2024 has shown a positive shift, with estimates indicating a remarkable 180% year-over-year increase in Netflix Games downloads in 2023, partly attributed to the success of titles like Grand Theft Auto.
Red Dead Redemption remains one of Rockstar's most beloved franchises, second only to the iconic Grand Theft Auto series. Its dedicated fanbase has long speculated about a potential prequel, and this new mobile launch could reignite interest and discussions around the future of the franchise.
Broader Gaming Initiatives
The mobile launch of Red Dead Redemption follows Netflix's recent expansion into games on smart TVs in October. This initiative allows subscribers to use their phones as controllers to play a variety of party titles, including Boggle Party, LEGO Party!, and Pictionary.
Furthermore, this rollout comes two years after Netflix introduced Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy to its mobile game catalog. However, subscribers should note that GTA: San Andreas will be leaving Netflix Games on December 12th.
