The timing of a SaaS product launch is a perpetual tightrope walk for startup founders. Launch too late, and you risk depleting crucial funding and resources. Launch too early, however, and you stand to alienate your most enthusiastic early adopters. This critical dilemma, often debated within the SaaS community, carries significant implications for user retention and long-term success.

The challenge is twofold:

  • Delaying too long can exhaust vital time and capital in many scenarios.
  • A premature launch risks alienating your earliest and often most passionate users and fans.

The author recounts making this very mistake with Adobe Sign (formerly EchoSign). Despite securing a $2.6 million seed round (which would now be considered pre-seed funding), the pressing concern of reaching Series A milestones led to a premature launch. The team was pushed to release a product that, while visually appealing, was fundamentally incomplete.

Another driving factor for the early release was a perception that the team's progress was too slow. The author believed that the public pressure of a launch, potentially featured on platforms like TechCrunch, would accelerate development. While this indeed spurred faster movement, it came at the significant cost of increased team stress.

Upon launch, the product was not fully functional. Despite its sleek appearance, critical underlying technology was unfinished, and one truly core feature remained unavailable. Consequently, many of the initial users, who had shown early interest, quickly disengaged.

In retrospect, the author believes a delay of just one release cycle—approximately 60 days—would have been optimal. This misjudgment was attributed to a lack of deep SaaS knowledge at the time. However, the author also acknowledges the counter-risk: waiting much longer could have led to running out of time and resources entirely.
