Spotify has announced a significant overhaul of its built-in song lyrics feature, introducing offline access for Premium subscribers, expanding global lyric translations, and repositioning the feature for enhanced visibility within the app. These updates aim to enrich the user experience and further incentivize upgrades to its Premium service.

These latest enhancements are part of Spotify's ongoing strategy to leverage its popular lyrics feature as a tool to convert free users into paying subscribers. This approach was notably seen in 2024 when Spotify initially attempted to place lyrics behind a paywall, only to ease restrictions later that year following widespread user complaints.

The company is now banking on the new offline lyrics capability, exclusively available to Premium subscribers, to be a key driver for user upgrades.

A key change in the new experience is the relocation of lyrics. They will now appear directly beneath the album artwork or the short, looping video that accompanies the music in the "Now Playing" view. Spotify states this more prominent placement was decided after user tests indicated a significant increase in engagement with the feature. Users will also retain the ability to share their favorite lyric snippets to social media directly from the "Now Playing" screen.

This enhanced display, referred to by Spotify as "lyric previews," is set to roll out globally for both free and paid users across iOS and Android apps for smartphones and tablets.

Furthermore, the lyric translation feature, initially launched in 2022, is now expanding its reach to become globally available. This marks a significant increase from the 25 markets previously supported. When translations are offered, users can tap a dedicated translate icon on the lyrics card to view the translated text beneath the original. Spotify confirms that the translation will automatically default to the language set on the user's device.

Historically, Spotify faced challenges in broadly implementing lyrics across its platform, primarily due to complex licensing issues. Despite years of strong consumer demand, the company finally introduced real-time lyrics to global users in 2021, following a more limited launch in dozens of markets the previous year and tests dating back to 2019. Prior to this, Spotify had collaborated with Genius on a "Behind the Lyrics" feature, which offered partial lyrics alongside song trivia.
