Truecaller, the popular caller identification and spam-blocking app, has introduced a new feature called Family Protection aimed at safeguarding entire households from the escalating threat of scam calls and digital fraud. This innovative system allows a designated administrator to manage scam-blocking settings for up to five family members, extending digital safety beyond individual users and addressing the growing sophistication of fraudsters targeting multiple members within a home.

How Truecaller's Family Protection Works

The Family Protection feature enables up to five individuals to join a family group. One member, acting as the administrator, oversees the group and centrally manages the scam-blocking settings for others. This design empowers the most digitally confident person in a household to protect less tech-savvy family members. Initially, the feature is rolling out as a pilot program for Android and iOS users in Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya.

Advanced Administrator Capabilities on Android

For Android users, the family administrator gains enhanced control. They can receive real-time alerts during suspected scam calls, view basic device status like battery levels, and even remotely end calls identified as fraudulent. This level of oversight is crucial as Truecaller expands its role beyond traditional caller ID services.

Combating Rising Global Scam Activity

The launch comes amidst a global surge in scam activity, particularly impacting first-time smartphone users and older adults who are more vulnerable to fraud. Countries like India have reported significant increases in impersonation attempts and complex multi-step schemes. Truecaller plans to address these challenges by expanding Family Protection to additional key regions, including India, in the first quarter of 2026.

Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala highlighted the shift in scammer tactics, noting that fraudsters are increasingly targeting entire households rather than individuals. He explained that scammers employ a sequence of calls, messages, and impersonation attempts to find a weak point, a trend that directly prompted the development of Truecaller's multi-user protection system.

Free vs. Premium Benefits

While Family Protection is available as a free feature, families can upgrade to a Premium Family plan. This premium subscription grants all group members an ad-free experience, along with stronger spam defense capabilities and the automatic rejection of high-risk calls, further bolstering their household security.

Truecaller's Scale and Market Adaptation

With a global user base exceeding 450 million, Truecaller plays a significant role in combating phone-based fraud, detecting approximately 63 million scam attempts and receiving reports of around 166 million spam calls daily. This vast community data provides one of the largest datasets for tracking fraud activity worldwide. In its largest market, India, Truecaller is also adapting to new competition, such as the government's trial of a Caller Name Presentation system, by continuously adding features like Family Protection that go beyond basic caller ID.

Jhunjhunwala concluded, "With Family Protection, one person’s vigilance now strengthens safety for up to five family members," emphasizing the company's commitment to extending digital protection without requiring additional effort from users.
