DoorDash has officially launched Zesty, a new AI-powered social application aimed at revolutionizing how users discover local restaurants. Initially rolling out in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York, Zesty marks a significant expansion for the food delivery giant.

This venture sees DoorDash moving beyond its core food delivery services, entering the competitive social and restaurant discovery market. Zesty aims to streamline the often-fragmented process of finding a new eatery, eliminating the need to sift through countless reviews, browse various menus, or scroll endlessly on platforms like TikTok.

Personalized Discovery with AI

Upon logging in with their existing DoorDash accounts, users can interact with an AI chatbot to receive personalized restaurant recommendations. The company demonstrated on an Instagram promo post that users can input highly specific prompts, such as "A low-key dinner in Williamsburg that's actually good for introverts," to get tailored suggestions. The app also provides curated prompts like "Brunch spots good for groups" or "Romantic dinner with a vintage feel" to guide discovery.

According to DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang, who shared insights in an X post, Zesty aggregates information from various sources including DoorDash's own data, Google Maps, and TikTok to "curate the best suggestions from the web." The app is designed to learn user preferences over time, refining its recommendations based on individual tastes. Users can save interesting discoveries and easily share them with friends.

A New Social Layer for Foodies

Emphasizing its social aspect, Zesty allows users to view and share photos and comments about restaurants they've visited. Users can also discover content from others and follow profiles, mirroring the interactive features found on conventional social networks.

A DoorDash spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch:

"At DoorDash, we're always looking for new ways to help people connect with the best of their communities. We're piloting an app called Zesty to make it easier to discover great nearby restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and more through personalized search and social sharing. We're excited to learn from early testers as we keep shaping what local discovery can look like."

The initial report on Zesty's launch came from Bloomberg.

While existing tools like Google, ChatGPT, and Gemini already offer restaurant discovery capabilities, Zesty aims to carve out its niche by offering a dedicated social network experience centered entirely on food exploration. This could appeal to users seeking a more curated and community-driven approach to finding new dining spots.

Zesty's introduction aligns with DoorDash's broader strategy to diversify beyond its core delivery business. Earlier this year, the company rolled out features enabling customers to make reservations for in-person dining and earn in-store rewards, signaling a clear push into comprehensive local commerce.
