Meta is empowering creators on its platforms with a new "Content Protection" feature for Facebook and Instagram. This tool is designed to help creators maintain control over their original Reels content by scanning for unauthorized reposts and providing options to manage their intellectual property.
How Facebook's Content Protection Works
The new system automatically scans both Facebook and Instagram for content that matches a creator's original Reels, whether it's a full or partial match. Once enrolled, every original Reel a creator posts to Facebook will be automatically protected. Creators will receive alerts for any detected unauthorized use, which they can then manage directly from their Professional Dashboard.
Meta states that this system utilizes the same matching process as its existing Rights Manager tool. Creators also have the flexibility to protect previously uploaded Reels by manually selecting them within the dashboard.
Creator Control: Track, Block, or Release
Upon detection of a content match, creators are presented with three distinct options to manage the reposted Reel:
- Track: This is the default setting. The matching Reel remains visible to other users, but the original creator stays informed about its performance. Creators can later change this action. For eligible tracked matches on Facebook, an "original by" label can be added, linking back to the creator's Page or Profile.
- Block: This option makes the matching Reel invisible on both Facebook and Instagram, reducing its distribution. It's important to note that this action does not directly result in disciplinary action against the reposting account.
- Release: Creators can choose to release their claim, allowing the Reel to remain visible on the platforms. This removes the matching post from the creator's match dashboard, meaning its performance can no longer be monitored.
Safeguards and Limitations
While the tool offers significant control, Meta has implemented safeguards to prevent misuse. Repeatedly attempting to claim and take action on Reels that a creator does not own can lead to restrictions or even loss of access to the feature.
Additionally, certain types of content are not eligible for protection, including reaction videos or compilations. These limitations aim to ensure the system is used fairly and effectively.
Broader Impact and Availability
This expanded content matching process is a continuation of Meta's efforts to support original creators and combat aggregator accounts. Last year, Instagram announced it would prioritize original content in recommendations and actively remove aggregator accounts. Content Protection further empowers creators to build their presence without losing value to reposters.
Access to Facebook content protection is currently available for creators enrolled in Meta's Content Monetization program who meet enhanced integrity and originality standards. The feature is also rolling out to creators who use Rights Manager via the Facebook mobile app. Interested creators can apply for access here.
This initiative marks a positive step for creators, helping them secure proper attribution and control over their work in an increasingly competitive digital landscape. The long-term impact on aggregator accounts and the broader creator ecosystem will be closely watched.
