WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging giant, is reintroducing its "About" status feature, allowing users to share short text updates that echo the functionality of Instagram Notes. This refreshed capability enables users to quickly post what they're doing, share new life updates, or even set a conversation starter, making their status more visible within the app.
Similar to how Instagram Notes operates, the new "About" feature lets WhatsApp users broadcast brief textual messages to their contacts. This dedicated space can be utilized to inform friends about your current activities, share significant life events, or even signal your availability for a chat. The company suggests it can also serve as a prompt for conversations or to indicate why you might be temporarily unreachable.
While this addition might seem novel to many, WhatsApp highlights in a blog post that the "About" feature was, in fact, one of its earliest functionalities. Before the platform shifted its primary focus to secure and private messaging, it originally allowed users to share quick, short updates much like these.
With this relaunch, WhatsApp has significantly boosted the visibility of users' "About" statuses. Contacts will now see your status prominently displayed at the top of their one-on-one chat screens and within user profiles. Furthermore, users can engage directly by tapping on someone's "About" status within a chat to send a reply.
Mirroring Instagram Notes, the WhatsApp "About" status is set to disappear by default after 24 hours. However, the company confirms that users will have the flexibility to adjust this timer, allowing the status to vanish sooner or persist for longer than a day. Users can also control who sees their "About" status, choosing between their contacts only or a more public audience.
At its initial rollout, WhatsApp's "About" feature is not as feature-rich as Instagram Notes, which currently supports short, looping video updates and integrations for sharing currently streaming music. Nevertheless, if the new functionality gains widespread adoption, similar enhancements and integrations could be introduced over time.
The "About" status feature is slated to roll out to WhatsApp users on mobile devices starting this week.
