Anthropic Restricts Windsurf's Claude AI Access Amid OpenAI Acquisition Rumors

Anthropic has limited Windsurf's direct access to its Claude AI models, particularly Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3.7 Sonnet. This decision follows reports of OpenAI's potential $3 billion acquisition of the AI coding assistant startup.

Speaking at TC Sessions: AI 2025, Anthropic Co-founder and Chief Science Officer Jared Kaplan explained the move. He stated that prioritizing computing resources for "lasting partnerships" was key. He also noted it would be "odd" to sell Claude to a major competitor like OpenAI.

We really are just trying to enable our customers who are going to sustainably be working with us in the future.

The rumored acquisition remains unconfirmed by both OpenAI and Windsurf. Windsurf previously expressed concern over the disruption and potential instability for users.

Kaplan emphasized Anthropic's current computing constraints. He highlighted a new partnership with Amazon to significantly expand their computing capacity in the coming months.

Anthropic Focuses on Long-Term Partnerships and In-House AI Coding

While distancing from Windsurf, Anthropic continues collaborations with other AI coding tool developers like Cursor. Kaplan denied any competition with such companies, even those developing their own AI models.

Anthropic is prioritizing its own agentic coding products, such as Claude Code, over AI chatbots. Kaplan believes AI agents offer greater long-term potential compared to the static nature of chatbots.
