Bluesky Enhances Live Sports Experience with New NBA Feature
Bluesky is beta testing a new feature designed to connect users directly with live NBA games. During games, the NBA's Bluesky account will display a "live" indicator. Clicking the NBA profile picture will redirect users to the live event, even if it's hosted off-platform.
This strategy differs from platforms like Twitter, which previously invested heavily in securing expensive live streaming rights. Bluesky, currently venture-backed, prioritizes user experience over ad revenue and platform engagement time. This allows them to efficiently direct users to external content, rather than competing for costly streaming rights.
“We aren’t trapping you in Bluesky,” wrote Rose Wang, COO of Bluesky. “We want you to use Bluesky to discover what’s happening.”
This feature aims to attract sports fans, a demographic that actively uses social media for live game discussions and updates. While some sports fans have transitioned to Bluesky, many remain on established platforms with larger user bases. Bluesky's new feature seeks to bridge this gap and establish itself as a valuable resource for the sports community.
Expanding to WNBA
Bluesky confirmed plans to extend this feature to WNBA games, further solidifying its commitment to providing comprehensive sports coverage.
This innovative approach could position Bluesky as a key player in the evolving landscape of social media and live sports engagement.
