CarPlay Ultra Arrives in Aston Martin
Apple's highly anticipated CarPlay Ultra is finally here, starting with Aston Martin vehicles in the US and Canada. This next-generation in-car infotainment system, announced three years ago, promises a more integrated and immersive driving experience.
Deeper Vehicle Integration
CarPlay Ultra goes beyond the standard CarPlay experience. It integrates with the vehicle's dashboard, displaying vital information like speed, fuel level, and temperature directly within the CarPlay interface. Powered wirelessly by an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5, CarPlay Ultra also allows control of certain vehicle settings.
While key vehicle functions like backup cameras will still operate independently, CarPlay Ultra offers a more seamless connection between the iPhone and the car.
Expanding Availability
Existing compatible Aston Martin vehicles will receive CarPlay Ultra via a software update available at dealerships in the coming weeks. Apple has also confirmed partnerships with Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to integrate CarPlay Ultra into their future vehicles.
Competition with Android Auto
This launch puts Apple in closer competition with Google's Android Auto, which has offered embedded operating systems for years. The timing coincides with Google's recent announcement of integrating its Gemini AI into Android Auto.
Customized Driving Experience
Apple emphasizes its collaboration with automakers to ensure CarPlay Ultra complements each brand's unique design. Drivers can personalize their experience with customizable themes, colors, and wallpapers.
Initial Rollout and Future Plans
While the initial rollout is limited, it marks a significant step forward from the basic CarPlay. The widespread popularity of CarPlay has made it a must-have feature for many drivers. This initial launch with Aston Martin is a smaller rollout than Apple initially envisioned, with some automakers, like Mercedes-Benz, opting not to adopt the new system.
