Character.AI Introduces AI Video Generation and Social Sharing
Character.AI, the platform known for AI-powered character interactions, has launched new multimedia features. These include AvatarFX, a video generation tool, along with Scenes and Streams for creating and sharing AI-generated videos.
AvatarFX allows users to create short videos using their AI characters. Users upload a photo as a base, select a voice, and input text for the character to speak. While an audio upload option exists for customizing voice, its functionality is currently limited.
New Features Expand Creative Possibilities and Social Interaction
With Scenes, users can integrate their characters into pre-existing storylines within the mobile app. Streams, launching soon on web and mobile, will enable dynamic interactions between two characters. A new community feed within the mobile app will facilitate sharing these Scenes and Streams.
Character.AI emphasizes its commitment to fostering creativity while maintaining a safe environment. However, the platform's expansion into multimedia raises concerns about potential misuse, particularly regarding deepfakes and harmful content.
Addressing Potential Risks of AI-Generated Video Content
Character.AI has implemented safeguards to mitigate these risks. Uploading photos of real people is blocked, and generated videos are watermarked. While these measures help, the potential for misuse remains a concern.
Previously, Character.AI faced lawsuits regarding harmful chatbot interactions. The platform's expansion into video generation necessitates careful consideration of ethical implications and user safety.
The company stated in a blog post: "Character.AI started as 1:1 text chat and today we're evolving to do so much more, inspired by what our users have told [us] they want to see on the platform." This evolution brings both exciting opportunities and significant challenges for the future of AI interaction.

Even with safeguards in place, the potential for misuse of AI-generated video content remains a concern that Character.AI and the broader tech community must address.
