OpenAI Explores "Sign in with ChatGPT" for Third-Party Apps

OpenAI is developing a new feature that will allow users to sign in to other apps using their ChatGPT account. The company is currently surveying developer interest in integrating this single sign-on (SSO) service.

With an estimated 600 million monthly active users, ChatGPT's popularity is undeniable. OpenAI aims to leverage this growth by expanding into new areas like online shopping, social media, and personal devices. This "Sign in with ChatGPT" feature could position OpenAI to compete with tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, who offer similar SSO services.

Early Developer Preview

OpenAI recently launched a preview of the "Sign in with ChatGPT" feature for developers using Codex CLI, its AI coding tool. This preview allowed developers to link their ChatGPT accounts (Free, Plus, or Pro) to their API accounts. OpenAI even offered API credits as an incentive for participation.

OpenAI appears to be targeting a wide range of companies for integration. Their developer interest form inquires about app user base size, existing AI feature monetization strategies, and current OpenAI API usage.

While CEO Sam Altman hinted at this possibility in 2023, concrete development seems to be underway now in 2025. A public launch date for the "Sign in with ChatGPT" feature and the number of participating companies remain undisclosed. OpenAI has not yet responded to requests for comment.
