Google Invests in 600MW Solar Power for Data Centers
Google has signed a new agreement to purchase 600 megawatts of solar power from EnergyRe. This clean energy will power Google's data centers and support the company's ongoing commitment to sustainability.
The deal focuses on solar and storage projects under development in South Carolina. EnergyRe currently has 16 gigawatts of projects in its pipeline.
Expanding Renewable Energy Investments
This latest agreement follows significant investments by Google in renewable energy. In 2024, the company pledged $20 billion to build zero-carbon power plants. This initiative aims to provide clean energy for several gigawatts worth of data centers. Earlier this year, Google also contracted for over 700 megawatts of solar power in Oklahoma.
Google aims to eliminate its operational carbon footprint by 2030. While the company has made steady progress in renewable energy adoption, the increasing demands of AI and its associated computing power require even greater investment in clean energy sources.
In 2023, Google contracted for 4 gigawatts of clean power. The growing need for AI infrastructure has accelerated the company's efforts to secure renewable energy.
Industry-Wide Trend Towards Renewable Energy
Google is not alone in this push for sustainable energy. Other tech giants like Microsoft and Meta are also making significant investments in solar power to support their data centers and address the growing energy demands of AI.
- Microsoft added hundreds of megawatts of solar power in 2025, including a 475-megawatt purchase in March.
- Meta secured contracts for 595 megawatts and 505 megawatts of solar energy in January and February 2025, respectively.
These industry-wide investments highlight the growing importance of renewable energy in powering the future of technology, particularly in the rapidly expanding field of AI.
