Google Boosts Device Security in Android 16 with Advanced Protection Enhancements

Google announced new device-level security features for its Advanced Protection Program, coinciding with the Android 16 release. This program safeguards high-risk users like journalists and politicians from digital threats. The updates focus on enhanced logging, stricter USB access, and automatic device restarts.

Enhanced Logging and Threat Analysis

Android 16 introduces intrusion logging for improved threat analysis. Device logs are end-to-end encrypted and stored securely in the cloud. These logs can be crucial for investigating potential compromises.

USB Security and Auto-Restart

To further protect locked devices, Android 16 restricts USB connections to charging only. Additionally, devices enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program will automatically restart after 72 hours of inactivity. This feature, previously reported in a Google Play services update, adds another layer of security.

Wi-Fi Security and Scam Detection

With Android 16, Advanced Protection will prevent automatic reconnection to unsecured Wi-Fi networks. The program also integrates scam detection for ongoing calls, privately processing conversations on the device to identify potential threats. This feature was previously rolled out for Pixel phones.

These new features strengthen the Advanced Protection Program, providing enhanced security for high-risk users on Android 16. They offer robust protection against various digital threats, including unauthorized access and malicious software.
