Google Meet Introduces Real-Time Speech Translation
Google announced real-time speech translation for Google Meet at Google I/O 2025. This feature uses a powerful language audio model from Google DeepMind. It allows for natural, flowing conversations between people speaking different languages.
How it Works
Google Meet's speech translation converts spoken words into the listener's preferred language instantly. The translation preserves the speaker's voice, tone, and expression. This low-latency technology enables multiple people to chat together seamlessly, a capability previously unavailable.
Users will faintly hear the original voice with the translated speech overlaid. Initially, the feature supports English and Spanish. More languages, including Italian, German, and Portuguese, will be added in the coming weeks.
Use Cases
This groundbreaking feature has diverse applications. Imagine English-speaking grandchildren connecting with their Spanish-speaking grandparents effortlessly. Businesses operating across different regions can also use this tool to facilitate real-time communication between global colleagues.
Google is currently beta testing speech translation with consumer AI subscribers. Early testing for Workspace customers will begin later this year.
