Jony Ive to Spearhead OpenAI Design Following $6.5 Billion Acquisition

Renowned Apple designer Jony Ive will lead creative and design at OpenAI. This follows OpenAI's acquisition of Ive's startup, io, for $6.5 billion.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his enthusiasm on X, stating, "Thrilled to be partnering with Jony, [in my opinion] the greatest designer in the world. Excited to try to create a new generation of AI-powered computers."

This partnership places Ive, famed for designing iconic Apple products like the iPhone, iPod, and Apple Watch, at the forefront of generative AI. OpenAI has significantly expanded its consumer focus since launching ChatGPT in 2022.

Ive's Role and Potential Impact

Ive's involvement could position OpenAI to compete directly with Apple in consumer hardware. This adds pressure on Apple, which has faced challenges in keeping pace with AI advancements from OpenAI and Google. Apple's stock dipped 2% following the announcement.

Io's team of approximately 55 engineers, scientists, and designers, many of whom are former Apple employees, will join OpenAI. Ive will also continue to lead his independent design firm, LoveFrom.

Under OpenAI, io will develop AI-powered consumer devices. Altman and Ive are reportedly working on a device that moves beyond traditional screens. Ive's expansive role will include contributing to future ChatGPT versions.

Acquisition Details

OpenAI already held a 23% stake in io. The $6.5 billion acquisition marks OpenAI's largest to date. The first devices from Ive and Altman are expected to debut in 2026.

Altman describes the device in development as "crazy, ambitious," and "worth the wait."
