Mistral Unveils Devstral: A Powerful Open-Source AI Model for Coding

AI startup Mistral has announced Devstral, a new open-source AI model designed for coding tasks. Developed in partnership with All Hands AI, Devstral is available under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing for unrestricted commercial use.

According to Mistral, Devstral surpasses the performance of other open models like Google's Gemma 3 27B and DeepSeek's V3 on the SWE-Bench Verified coding benchmark. It excels at using tools to explore codebases, editing multiple files, and powering software engineering agents.

Devstral runs on code agent scaffolds like OpenHands and SWE-Agent, defining the interface between the model and test cases. It's lightweight enough to run on a single Nvidia RTX 4090 or a Mac with 32GB of RAM, ideal for local and on-device deployment.

Devstral's arrival coincides with the growing popularity of AI coding assistants. Recent months have seen a surge in new AI coding models from companies like JetBrains, Google, Windsurf, and OpenAI.

While AI models still face challenges in producing high-quality, secure code, their potential to boost productivity is driving rapid adoption among developers. A recent survey revealed that 76% of developers used or planned to use AI tools in their workflows.

This release marks a shift from Mistral's previous code model, Codestral, which had commercial use restrictions. Devstral, currently a research preview, is accessible via platforms like Hugging Face and Mistral's API. Pricing is set at $0.1 per million input tokens and $0.3 per million output tokens.

Mistral's Expanding AI Portfolio

Devstral is Mistral's third product launch this month, following the release of Mistral Medium 3, a general-purpose model, and Le Chat Enterprise, a corporate chatbot service. The company is currently developing a larger agentic coding model for release in the coming weeks.

Founded in 2023, Mistral focuses on building AI-powered services. Backed by prominent VCs and with a substantial funding base, Mistral serves clients including BNP Paribas, AXA, and Mirakl.
