Google Bolsters Android Security Against Scams and Theft

Google announced new security and privacy features for Android at a recent Android Show, preceding Google I/O. These enhancements aim to protect users from scams, secure devices against theft, and improve overall system security.

Enhanced Call and Screen Sharing Protection

New protections for calls and screen sharing combat scammers who manipulate users into unsafe actions. Android 16 will block unverified app sideloading and restrict accessibility permissions during calls. Google Play Protect, which scans for harmful apps, will be mandatory for Android 6 and later users during calls. A screen-sharing reminder will prompt users to stop sharing after a call ends. A pilot program with U.K. banks will display scam warnings when users open banking apps while screen sharing with unknown numbers.

Strengthened Message Security

Google Messages receives enhanced scam protection, building on features launched in March. On-device AI now detects a wider range of fraud attempts, including crypto scams, gift card fraud, and impersonation schemes. Verification keys in Google Contacts will authenticate message recipients using QR codes or matching numbers, ensuring end-to-end encrypted conversations. This feature will be available this summer for Android 10 and later.

Advanced Theft Protection Measures

Identity Check protection, requiring biometric authentication for critical setting changes, expands to more Android 16 devices. Later this year, enhanced Factory Reset Protection will restrict device functionality after unauthorized resets. A security challenge question will prevent unauthorized remote locking. One-time passwords (OTPs) will be hidden on the lock screen unless the device is connected to Wi-Fi and recently unlocked.

Additional Security Enhancements

Google Play Protect gains improved live detection of unsafe apps with hidden or changed icons. New on-device rules will catch more malicious apps. Advanced Protection Mode receives updates for public figures. A new Find My Hub will help users track items, friends, and family.
