OpenAI Establishes Major Data Center in UAE with Cisco and Oracle

OpenAI is expanding its Stargate data center initiative to the Middle East with a new 1GW facility in Abu Dhabi, called Stargate UAE. The company announced the project, partnering with G42, Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, and SoftBank, with an initial 200MW expected to be operational in 2026.

This new data center aims to provide substantial AI infrastructure and computing power within a 2,000-mile radius, according to OpenAI.

This is the first partnership under OpenAI for Countries, our new global initiative to help interested governments build sovereign AI capability in coordination with the U.S. government. Under the partnership, the UAE will become the first country in the world to enable ChatGPT nationwide – giving people across the country the ability to access OpenAI’s technology.

The Stargate UAE project marks OpenAI's first international data center venture under its "OpenAI for Countries" initiative. This program aims to assist governments in developing their own AI capabilities.

The announcement coincides with Elon Musk's xAI revealing plans for its own large-scale AI training cluster. This highlights the growing global race to build advanced AI infrastructure.

The Stargate UAE data center represents a significant step in expanding access to OpenAI's technology. The partnership with the UAE government underscores the growing importance of AI on a global scale.
