Reddit Enhances User Privacy with New Profile Controls
Reddit launched a new feature on Tuesday, giving users more control over their online presence. The new "Content and Activity" settings allow users to curate which posts and comments are visible on their profiles.
Previously, all public Reddit activity was displayed on user profiles. Now, users can choose to hide all activity, selectively display content from specific communities, or maintain full visibility. This offers greater privacy for sensitive discussions, such as relationship advice or health concerns.
This update also addresses the growing need for privacy as Reddit evolves into an ad-focused platform. While the platform benefits from user engagement data for ad targeting, these controls empower users to manage their digital footprint.
How the New Privacy Settings Work
The new "Curate your profile" section houses these controls, along with toggles for NSFW content visibility and follower counts. Users can choose which subreddits they want visible on their profiles, offering granular control over their public image.
While these settings enhance privacy, they don't offer complete anonymity. Usernames remain visible next to posts and comments within communities. Moderators retain access to user post and comment history for 28 days for moderation purposes, regardless of visibility settings.
Additionally, profile owners can temporarily see a user's full post and comment history if another user comments directly on their profile post.
Encouraging Engagement and Participation
These new privacy features may encourage more user participation. Knowing they can control the visibility of their activity, users may feel more comfortable engaging in sensitive discussions or asking personal questions.
Additional Updates
Along with the privacy update, Reddit introduced revamped personal activity summaries. These summaries provide an overview of user activity, including Karma, total contributions, account age, and active communities based on the new Content and Activity settings.
