Run AI Models Offline with Google's New Android App
Google has quietly launched the AI Edge Gallery, an experimental Android app that allows users to download and run various AI models directly on their devices. The app leverages on-device processing, eliminating the need for an internet connection.
Available now on Android, with iOS support coming soon, the AI Edge Gallery features models from the Hugging Face AI dev platform. These models offer diverse capabilities, including image generation, question answering, code writing and editing, and AI chat.
While cloud-based AI models often offer greater power, running models locally provides key advantages. Offline functionality ensures data privacy and accessibility, even without internet access.

Interested users can download the Alpha release of the Google AI Edge Gallery from GitHub by following the instructions here. The app's home screen provides shortcuts to AI tasks like "Ask Image" and "AI Chat." Selecting a task displays a list of suitable models, including Google's Gemma 3n.
The app also includes a "Prompt Lab" for single-turn tasks like text summarization and rewriting. The Prompt Lab offers various templates and settings for customizing model behavior.
Performance may vary depending on device hardware and model size. Modern devices with powerful processors will generally run models faster. Larger models may require more processing time for tasks like image analysis.
Google encourages developer feedback on the AI Edge Gallery experience. The app is released under the Apache 2.0 license, permitting its use in commercial and non-commercial contexts.
