SoundCloud Updates Terms of Use After AI Backlash

SoundCloud has revised its terms of use following widespread criticism regarding a clause about AI model training. The initial update, implemented earlier this year, caused concern among users who interpreted it as permission for SoundCloud to use uploaded audio for AI development.

While SoundCloud quickly denied using user content for AI training, the company's initial statement failed to address concerns about potential future use. This led to CEO Eliah Seton publishing an open letter acknowledging that the original wording was too broad and unclear.

Revised Terms Clarify AI Usage

Seton explained that the initial updates were intended to cover internal AI uses, such as recommendations and fraud prevention. However, the wording inadvertently created confusion about the use of user-generated content.

SoundCloud has now revised its terms “to make it absolutely clear [that] SoundCloud will not use [user] content to train generative AI models that aim to replicate or synthesize [a] voice, music, or likeness,” said Seton.

The revised terms aim to reassure users that their uploaded music and audio will not be used to train generative AI models. This addresses the core concern regarding copyright and the potential misuse of user content for AI development.
