Strava Expands Training Features with Two Key Acquisitions
Fitness app Strava has acquired two training platforms: Runna and The Breakaway. This move signals Strava's commitment to providing comprehensive training tools for its users.
Runna Acquisition Targets Runners
Last month, Strava acquired Runna, a UK-based running training app. Runna uses AI to create personalized training plans for runners of all levels.
The Breakaway Acquisition Focuses on Cyclists
Following the Runna acquisition, Strava acquired The Breakaway, a cycling-focused training app. Similar to Runna, The Breakaway leverages AI to develop personalized cycling training plans based on individual goals.
What These Acquisitions Mean for Strava Users
Strava is already a popular platform for tracking workouts and connecting with other athletes. With these acquisitions, Strava aims to become a one-stop shop for fitness training and social interaction.
Strava CEO Michael Martin emphasized the company's commitment to enhancing the user experience. He stated that Strava wants to reduce friction between planning, training, and sharing workouts.
“Think about how runners plan routes in Strava, train with Runna, and then share back to Strava again — we want to reduce friction in that loop.”
While Strava boasts a public API used by hundreds of training apps, these acquisitions suggest a deeper integration of training features directly within the Strava platform.
Strava has reassured users that its open API will remain available. It's currently unclear how Runna and The Breakaway will be integrated into the Strava app. Martin indicated that Runna will remain a standalone app, and it's likely The Breakaway will follow suit.
Pricing and Future Plans
Strava currently offers a yearly subscription for approximately $80. Runna and The Breakaway's yearly subscriptions cost around $120 and $70, respectively. Strava has stated there are no immediate plans to change pricing for these products or remove their free versions.
These acquisitions position Strava to compete more effectively in the personalized fitness training market. The integration of AI-powered training plans could attract new users and enhance the experience for existing members.
