Whoop Reverses Course on 5.0 Upgrade Policy After Customer Complaints
Whoop has modified its upgrade policy for the Whoop 5.0 fitness tracker after facing significant customer backlash.
The initial policy required members to extend their subscriptions or pay a fee for the new device. This contradicted Whoop's previous promise of free hardware upgrades for long-term subscribers.
Following numerous complaints, Whoop announced a revised policy on Reddit. Members with 12 or more months remaining on their subscription are now eligible for a free Whoop 5.0 upgrade. Those with shorter subscriptions can extend their current plan to receive the upgrade at no extra cost. Whoop also offered refunds to those who already paid the upgrade fee.
Whoop Cites Transition to Longer Subscription Model
Whoop attributed the initial policy to its shift from monthly and six-month subscriptions to 12 and 24-month plans. The company also admitted to an error on its website regarding the six-month upgrade eligibility, stating it was never their policy.
The community response has been mixed. Some users celebrated the change as a win, while others remain skeptical, criticizing Whoop for the initial policy and subsequent backtracking.
Several users expressed frustration at narrowly missing the free upgrade cutoff with 11-month subscriptions.
